Company History

Harold L. Barker, the grandfather of Robert B. Brack, our President, CEO and primary stockholder, founded Barker Steel in 1922. The first fabricating shop was at Watertown.

Shortly after Robert B. Brack assumed the leadership of the Company in 1970, he expanded into Western Massachusetts, acquiring Pioneer Steel and constructing a new fabricating shop at South Deerfield in 1975.
Barker Steel grew through acquisitions entering the New England, Upstate New York, New York City, and New Jersey markets in the 1990's.
William Brack, the fourth generation of the family in the business, joined Barker Steel as the Chief Operating Officer in 1995.
The Forming Division was incorporated into the Barker Steel Building Products Division in 1999.
In 2004 Post-tensioning was added to Barker's divisions using the Avenel, NJ facility as its production site.
In June 2007 Barker Steel expanded its business in the New York area by opening the Queens, NY location, which stocks rebar, mesh, and concrete building products.
In 2007 Barker entered into an agreement with Harris Rebar Inc. to form a new entity that combined Barker Steel Company, Inc.’s and Harris Rebar Inc.’s Bethlehem, PA and Rochester, MA rebar fabrication operations. The new company is Barker Steel LLC, a Harris Rebar company.
In April 2008 Barker launched its new company – Barker Steel Erectors LLC, to provide placement of reinforcing steel and mesh.
In addition to the acquisition of fabricating plants, Barker has constantly updated its fabricating equipment and procedures. Barker has pioneered in the use of CAD detailing and a well designed and operating management information service.
