Harold
L. Barker, the grandfather of Robert B. Brack,
our President, CEO and primary stockholder founded
Barker Steel in 1922. The first fabricating shop was
at Watertown.
- Shortly after
Robert B. Brack assumed the leadership of the Company
in 1970, he expanded into Western Massachusetts
through the acquisition of Pioneer Steel and the
construction of a new fabricating shop at South
Deerfield in 1975.
- Barker acquired
Northern Steel and it's Medford shop in 1979. Northern
Steel had a long history of fabricating reinforcing
steel for the Boston market.
- In 1984, Barker
acquired K-Ross Company of Lebanon, New Hampshire.
In addition to fabricating reinforcing bars, K-Ross
had an active business in fabricating structural
steel and in marketing a broad range of building
products.
- In 1988, Barker
purchased the Albany, North Haven and Allentown
operations of what was Bethlehem Rebar Industries,
Inc., and before that, Bethlehem Steel. This acquisition
more than doubled our capacity and took us into
new markets in New York State and Connecticut. In
addition, Barker became the agent for Bethlehem
Steel Corporation on the sale of sheet piling and
bearing piles in the Barker Sales territory.
- In 1994, Barker
acquired a fabricating shop, the former A.J. Ross
Company, in Keasbey, NJ, which supports the New
York City and New Jersey markets.
- In 1995, Barker
shifted its Connecticut operations from North Haven
to a plant in South Windsor, the former Capital
Steel of Hartford.
- William Brack,
the fourth generation of family in the business,
joined Barker Steel as the Chief Operating Officer
in 1995.
- In April 1996,
Barker built a new fabricating plant in Westfield,
MA.
- March 1996,
the Barker Steel Corporate Offices moved to Milford,
MA.
- The Forming
Division was incorporated in the Barker Steel Building
Products Division in 1999.
- 2000 saw the
construction of our new Canaan
reinforcing and structural steel site.
- The Canton,
MA location opened since October, 2001.
- Our newest location
Pawtucket, RI has been opened since June 2003.
- In addition
to the acquisition of fabricating plants, Barker
has constantly updated its fabricating equipment
and procedures. Barker has pioneered in the use
of CAD detailing and a well designed and operating
management information service.
- End of June 2005 the Keasbey shop and sales office
moved to their new homes in Avenel, NJ.
