Cobiax Wins Swiss Environmental Award

In the context of the “Swissbau” trade show in Basel, the Swiss Environmental Prize was awarded on the 12th of January 2010.  The winner in the category “Technical Innovation” is Cobiax Technologies AG which could convince the expert panel with its technology.

The Swiss Environmental Prize is one of the highest environmental distinctions awarded in Switzerland and is organized on a biennial basis by the “Pro Aqua-Pro Vita” foundation and sponsored by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment.  In his laudation, the president of the jury, Prof. Dr. Rainer Bunge expressed his respect for the winning product of Cobiax Technologies AG.  According to Bunge the technology convinced the jury due to its ecological performance, its innovative nature and the professional implementation.  “Really powerful inventions are always characterized by the fact that one immediately thinks: logic, it’s self-evident!”  And exactly this was kind of the reaction the expert panel had when examining the candidature of Cobiax, Prof. Bunge further said.

The Cobiax technology contributes to the climate protection and helps to attain the CO2 reduction goals set by governments worldwide.  The concrete reduction thanks to the Cobiax void formers leads to an increased resource effectiveness and lowers by 20% the environmental-related toxicity of conventional solid slabs.  In Switzerland alone, the annual CO2 reduction potential by using Cobiax to create voided concrete slabs amounts to about 60’000 tons.

Nowadays, about 50% of the global energy consumption and the related CO2 emissions are due to buildings.  With an assumed average live-span of 50 years, about 60% of this energy volume is used for the operation of buildings; the remaining 40% is linked to the building’s structure.  In other words: the potential is huge to further optimize the ecological footprint of concrete structures.
